Wow! 2019. What a year. We’re incentivized to make 2020 much better, and we’ve got the votes and smarts and community resources to make it happen. May the Gods of Our Understanding inspire us on this important journey.

Leadership Austin is celebrating its 40th anniversary and it has much to celebrate. The program, initially sponsored by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, has identified, trained and placed hundreds of well-trained and motivated “community trustees” throughout the community. The expanding alumni base can be found in prominent leadership positions in Austin government, non-profits, business and education. As an alum myself, I can attest to the importance of the program in nurturing a leadership base that can leverage many constructive resources. I’m proud to join others in celebrating this notable anniversary. CONGRATS, LEADERSHIP AUSTIN!

While we can strive to remain immature, as I try to model, we can’t stop the aging process. Our aches and pains attest to that reality. Another reality is that aging ain’t what it used to be, and there are many pills, potions, exercise regimens and innovative programs specifically designed to address those of us who are slightly beyond our midlife crisis stage. I recently had the opportunity to participate in a conference that dramatically opened my eyes, heart and mind to a new age of aging possibilities. Come join me to share these challenges and revelations. LET’S MOSEY!

“Art” is where we find it, both inside and outside of our galleries and museums. Both Picasso and my friend Darden Smith have salient observations as we better engage the beauty around us. We just have to learn to pause, engage, notice and reflect. The rewards are immeasurable…often soul deep. Take a few minutes to notice these personal photographs, then consider how you can better curate your own life experiences. LET’S MOSEY!

We’ve got some significant challenges to rebuild this Country with compassion, integrity and respect for our land and All God’s creatures. But, we’re creative, resourceful and imminently capable when we’re focused and motivated. LET’S BE. LET’S MOSEY!

Creative expression can enhance/save your life. It has mine. In “The Artist’s Way,” Julia Cameron observes that we’re all gifted, but many of us never realize our gifts. Many blocks, real and imagined, often keep us from fully realizing, or even identifying our creative possibilities. There are many tools and paths that can open our hearts, minds and spirit to a fuller, more colorful and rewarding life. Join me as I discuss these options, and relate how I’ve sought to walk the talk. It’s never too late to explore your creative potential. Your Friend in the Mirror will thank you, and your family and friends will be glad you considered, “Who ya gonna be, when you get to be you?”

It’s too easy for many of us to waste our emotional and physical energy focusing on the latest Washington political outrage, which occurs almost daily. While I can’t help but pay some responsible attention, I’m trying to shift my civic focus locally, where I can make a more direct contribution. My last Mosey Commentary highlighted the concept of “Civic Heroes,” which we should all aspire to be. Our communities need us, there are always a broad array of issues and programs from which to choose, and the personal gratification from making a positive difference can be significant. All while working with old friends, or making new ones in a common cause. Everybody wins! I find my attitude improves considerably when I focus my civic energies locally. It might work for you, too. Let’s Mosey!
